Stock option trading

For investors looking for a more sophisticated method of profiting from the movement of shares, stock options trading may be very suitable.

Stock options trading is not for everyone and that should be noted from the beginning. This type of stock investment is highly speculative and somewhat complex.

The simplest form of stock market investing is to buy the shares of a particular company. If the share price goes higher, you profit. If the price drops, you lose. Simple enough.

Imagine then a stock market trading vehicle where you buy a stock and immediately have a set amount of profit, no matter what the price movement is in the next three months? That is one strategy you can use with options trading.

Another way you can profit from options trading is to buy a stock and if the price falls, you loose nothing but only break even. On the other hand, what if the price does not move at all over six months, you still profit. All this is possible with options.

Although buying and selling shares of stock has been available for 200 years, options trading is relatively new. Stock options trading was only structured through an exchange in the early 1970’s. Since then, this speculative investment has grown rapidly.

As I said though, stock options are not for everyone. It is a strategy-based investment that involves a great degree of leverage. That is, you can win big, but your total investment can be wiped out. Having said that though, stock options trading can be done for a fraction of the price of buying shares of stock. You have much less invested through options trading, but you can loose it all.

Involving yourself in options trading can be very financially rewarding. However, it is not an investment to handle on your own without a good knowledge base. There are many companies that will allow you to train yourself in the stock options trading market if you course your orders through them. Get one of the numerous books written on stock options trading. In fact, you should buy several to learn options trading well.

Stock options trading is not mystical; it is different. Therefore, it requires you learn the ‘whats’, ‘hows’, and ‘whys’ to avoid a financial disaster.

There are many firms nowadays that specialize in options trading. Some of these companies have fully managed accounts where they do all the decision making for the trading. If you are considering setting up a managed stock options trading account, it might be wise to spread your money with two or three different firms.
